One of my treasured travel rules is being able to speak with the locals. Nothing beats questioning the women protesting in the street in La Paz, Bolivia, or touring San Sebastian, Spain with a new Basque friend. To varying degrees (and successes) I’ve studied Spanish, French, and Welsh.
